The Low Emission Zone has been very successful in encouraging operators of the heaviest, most polluting lorries, buses and coaches to use less polluting vehicles, fit abatement equipment or re-organise their fleets. The latest figures show that 98 per cent of vehicles over 12 tonnes and 96 per cent of vehicles over 3.5 tonnes and buses and coaches are compliant with the emissions standards of the scheme. The Low Emission Zone will continue to play a major role in deterring the most individually polluting vehicles from driving in the Capital and encouraging operators and owners of non-compliant vehicles to take steps to comply with the emissions standards of the scheme. The scheme standards will rise again for HGVS over 3.5 tonnes, buses and coaches in January 2012 and will have to meet the Euro IV standard for particulate matter to continue to drive within Greater London without charge.

The Low Emission Zone is to include larger vans (over 1.205 tonnes unladen); motor caravans and ambulances (over 2.5 tonnes); and minibuses (under 5 tonnes) which will have to meet a Euro III standard for particulate matter. However, this will not be implemented in 2010 as originally planned and Transport for London is due to consult on deferring the date to the 3 January 2012.
